Decline in Money for Colleges

March 15, 1986

Iam a student at Los Angeles Pierce College and I am writing to you about the severe decline in funding for all of our community colleges. What is being done to address the needs of our community colleges? These schools give vital services to all of our young people and adults who would otherwise remain school dropouts.

It seems we are becoming an elitist society where only the rich and powerful will be able to educate their children now and in the future. Tom Jefferson said that we must have an enlightened electorate to survive as a democracy. If we close all of our community colleges and continue to weaken the curriculum, our dream of democracy as we know it will vanish quickly.
