A continued upward trend in multiple-family housing permits during 1985 was offset by a slight downturn in single-family home construction, resulting in a decrease in overall building activity for the year in the Fresno-Clovis area.

Single-family units represented 37% of the building activity with a total of 1,321, in contrast with 1,699 in 1984. Multiple units totaled 2,238, up 100 from 1984.
In a survey of apartments with 20 or more units, the report showed the vacancy rate at 5.5% from November through December. This did not include new apartments, those 2,389 units that began renting in 1985, but any concern about multifamily units being overbuilt was not substantiated, according to Kathleen R. Allen, the Cal State lecturer who directed the student-conducted study.
