AUSTIN, Minn. — Police today arrested 24 striking meatpackers out of a group of about 200 who blocked the gates of the Geo. A. Hormel & Co. plant, preventing replacement workers in the bitter seven-month walkout from starting work on time.
For about three hours, demonstrators locked arms behind their vehicles blocking plant gates and chanted: "They say get back. We say fight back." A judge this month lifted an injunction forbidding people from gathering in groups of more than six on roads leading to the plant, but he said police could still enforce other laws should demonstrators block the roads.
