Norwalk : 6% Teacher Raise at College

March 27, 1986

The Cerritos College Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to give a 6% raise to its 250 teachers retroactive to Jan. 1.

The one-year agreement will raise the average salary for first-year teachers to $21,958 and to $48,271 for teachers with more than 30 years of experience. The board agreed to give each teacher a one-time bonus of $560.

The college, which is based in Norwalk, does not have a teachers union but is represented by a 20-member faculty committee that negotiates with the board through the college president.

The group, which began negotiations in November, had originally proposed an 11.6% salary increase.

During its meeting last week, the board also approved a 6% salary increase for district Superintendent-President Wilford Michael and two assistant superintendents, Olive Scott and Walter Magnuson. Michael will be paid $73,988 a year and Scott and Magnuson will each receive $64,448. All three will also receive the $560 bonus.

The college, which has an enrollment of 17,272, serves the cities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, La Mirada and Norwalk.
