San Diego Prep Baseball : Hook Leads Santana Over Mt. Miguel

April 04, 1986

SAN DIEGO — Jim Saska, the Santana High School baseball coach, called Mike Hook's performance Thursday against Mount Miguel, "pretty good."

Chances are that Mount Miguel thought it was a bit better than that. The Sultans' senior left-hander stuck out 15 Matadors to lead Santana to a 6-2 win in a Grossmont League game at Santana.

Hook (3-1) allowed five hits and walked four in his complete game.

"He threw a pretty strong game," Saska said. "When he got in some trouble, he came up with the big pitch."

Santana (2-0 in league, 9-1 overall) got off to a fast start thanks to Scott Papillon, who hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. The Sultans added one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth before the Matadors were able to get to Hook. Jeff Gay and Billy Reed each had two hits for Santana.

The victory left Santana tied with Valhalla and Grossmont at the top of the league standings after the first week of play. Valhalla and Santana will meet April 15 at Valhalla.

In other Grossmont League action:

Valhalla 3, Helix 2--Steve Phoenix pitched a complete-game seven-hitter and Jim Jacobs had two hits to lead the Norsemen (2-0, 9-3) past the Highlanders at Helix. Jacobs snapped a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a run-scoring single and Rob Sharp followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1. Scott St. Clair was 2 for 3 to lead Helix.

El Capitan 10, El Cajon 3--Steve Nowlan had three hits to raise his batting average to .400 as the Vaqueros (1-1, 6-6) beat the Braves at El Cajon. Nowlan also was the winning pitcher, going the first six innings to improve his record to 2-0. Ron Wilson hit a two-run home run for El Cajon in the third inning.

Grossmont 7, Monte Vista 6--The Foothillers improved their league record to 2-0 with a victory over the Monarchs at Monte Vista. Monte Vista is 0-2 in league.

In nonleague action:

San Marcos 6, Carson City (Nev.) 2--Tino Lozano, who was 2 for 4, hit a solo home run in the fifth as the host Knights beat the Senators (5-4). Chuy Lozano's two-run single capped the three-run first and put San Marcos (5-4) ahead for good. Chuy Lozano was 2 for 3. Marc Villalobos (1-0) pitched the first four innings for the win. Carson City, which has lost all three of its games in San Diego County, made five errors. Four of the Knights' runs were earned.

Madison 8, Sweetwater 0--Scott Anderson pitched the first five innings to pick up the win and the Warhawks took advantage of five Sweetwater errors in the victory at Sweetwater. None of Madison's runs were earned.
