Martinez Loses Transcript Plea : San Diego

April 08, 1986

The 4th District Court of Appeal refused Monday to keep sealed the transcript of the San Diego County Grand Jury proceedings that led to the indictment of City Councilman Uvaldo Martinez.

Raymond J. Coughlan, Martinez's attorney, had asked the appellate court to overturn a ruling by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Richard Huffman that ordered the release of the transcripts early today. Coughlan argued that it could prejudice Martinez's case if the transcripts became public.

The grand jury indicted Martinez last month on 28 felony counts of misappropriating and falsely accounting for public funds in connection with his use of a city-issued credit card. The councilman has pleaded innocent to the charges.
