Mike Ponio, an All-San Diego County baseball player at San Marcos High last year, pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead Hawaii past San Diego State, 12-2, in a Western Athletic Conference college baseball game in Honolulu late Sunday night.
The Aztecs (0-3 in conference, 20-14-1 overall) and Rainbows (3-0, 24-11) finished their four-game series in Hawaii late Monday night.
Hawaii put an end to Sunday's game by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to go ahead, 12-2. The game was stopped because of the conference's 10-run rule, where a team ahead by 10 or more runs after the fifth inning wins.
The Rainbows scored six times in the bottom of the first inning Sunday. Aztec starter and loser Richard Holsman allowed only hit in the inning but issued seven walks. San Diego State pitchers walked 15. Ponio is 4-0.
United States International University 19, Azusa Pacific 10--Steve Hendricks had five hits including a home run and six RBIs to lead the Gulls to the nonconference victory at Azusa. Ian Kelly added two hits and drove in four runs as USIU (15-24) won for the 12th time in its last 20 games. Mike Poteet (6-6) pitched the first five innings to pick up the win.
