After two years as second in command of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Lakewood substation, Sue Burgoon has been promoted from lieutenant to captain and will become commander of the department's communications and fleet management bureau in East Los Angeles this month.
Burgoon, 49, who has been with the department for 19 years, had been assigned to the Lakewood station for four years. She served as a watch commander for the patrol and traffic divisions.
Whittier College graduate Donna Kendall has been appointed to the Whittier College board of trustees. Kendall, of New York City and Cody, Wyo., is a partner and director of an Italian clothing fashions firm, co-owner of a 100,000-acre working ranch and founding partner of Five Star Steaks, a beef marketing company.
Tamara Calero, a 12th-grade student at Mayfair High School in Lakewood, has been selected to receive the Doris McDevitt Scholarship. The annual $1,000 scholarship is given to a Bellflower Unified School District student whose career goal is to enter the teaching profession. Calero, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clemente Calero of Norwalk, plans to attend UCLA in the fall.
