L.A.'s Fair Housing Fight

April 13, 1986

Congratulations on Beverly Beyette's excellent article on fair housing ("Fair Housing Battles with 'Our Own Apartheid,' " March 16). The key point that needs to be brought home to everyone is that people who: discriminate in provision of housing on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin or other arbitrary basis, including families with children; or use violence or intimidate people by threat of violence, committed against their persons or property because of their race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, political affiliation, or sex are breaking the law!

In addition to the day-to-day efforts at conciliation and education, the Westside Fair Housing Council works with its fellow Fair Housing Councils, the Fair Housing Congress of Southern California, and various government agencies, helping to protect people, many of whom cannot get private counsel to take their cases, against such illegal activity. This is a specialized, complex, expensive process, which deserves the increasing support it is now starting to get from the community.

MARVIN ADELSON

President,

Westside Fair Housing Council
