After the Field Is Cleared, San Diego State Loses to Utah, 10-8

After a four-hour delay to allow snow plows to clear the field Monday, San Diego State's baseball team lost 10-8 to the University of Utah in a Western Athletic Conference game in Salt Lake City.

SDSU is 1-8 in conference, 21-18-1 overall. Utah is 3-6, 7-18.

Utah was led by Chris Shulteis, who was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Teammate Travis Hansen drove in two runs with two singles. SDSU's Deron Johnson went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. The Aztecs' Andy Johannsen had the game's only homer, a solo shot in the second inning. Mike Downs (2-1) won for Utah. Tony Faryniarz (4-2) took the loss.

The game was intended to be the first of a doubleheader, but the second game was postponed because of darkness. The two teams will play a tripleheader today.

United States International University 19, Southern California College 5--USIU (20-23) took a 16-0 lead in the first four innings for its 10th win in a row.

USIU's Steve Hendricks went 4 for 5 with two doubles and six RBIs. In their last 10 games, the Gulls have outscored their opponents 103-37. Carl Grovom (5-3) beat Brian Sullivan (6-2).
