65 Tons of Marijuana Seized by Burma Forces

April 23, 1986|Associated Press

RANGOON, Burma — Government troops and police seized the country's biggest known haul of marijuana after a skirmish with rebel troops, the state radio announced Tuesday.

Acting on tips that huge crops of marijuana were growing in Bokepyin township 400 miles southeast of Rangoon, authorities launched a campaign to hunt down the marijuana last month, the radio said.

They seized and destroyed 65 tons of marijuana, the broadcast said. It was growing on what the radio called the country's biggest marijuana plantation. The local value of the confiscated marijuana was about $2.3 million, the broadcast said.
