The Berkeley Police Assn. urged the City Council to rescind a resolution that barred the police chief from sending officers to anti-apartheid protests on the University of California campus there. The measure adopted this week directed the chief "not to respond to any request for assistance by UC directly or under mutual aid for any anti-apartheid demonstrations providing such response is discretionary." "We don't want our police to basically stifle protest about the university's investments in South Africa," Councilwoman Nancy Skinner said.
