The State

April 27, 1986

Two prestigious art schools on opposite sides of San Francisco Bay are considering a merger that would create the fourth largest art school in the nation. The San Francisco Art Institute, which has counted Mark Rothko, Imogen Cunningham and Ansel Adams among its students and faculty, may join the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Officials say the union would result in a combined student body of 3,350 and eliminate their competition for federal and private money.
