Blast at Philadelphia Fire Station Kills One

May 04, 1986|Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — An explosion that rocked the street ripped through a fire station Saturday night, killing one firefighter and injuring three others, one critically, officials said.

The explosion blew out the windows of the Engine 34 station in north Philadelphia.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Frank Cippione would not speculate on the cause of the explosion, but said the fire station was heated by a gas furnace in the basement.
