The Tragedy at Central Library

May 04, 1986

I'll be the first to step forward in support for demolition of the old library building. The place has simply outlived its usefulness as a suitable center for the library system.

The preservationists can turn it into a shrine to architecture if they want, but the people of Los Angeles deserve a new library.

According to The Times' article (April 30), our city fathers have been promising one for 20 years! Just think, a generation grew up without the educational benefits of a modern facility.
