Firemen Contain Blaze in Shenandoah Forest

May 06, 1986|United Press International

LURAY, Va. — A fire that forced the closing of the Skyline Drive Parkway through Shenandoah National Forest was almost under control Monday, but firefighters said that brisk winds and dry weather could rekindle the flames.

Fire crews worked through the night to clear a trench that contained most of the blaze, said Chuck Anibal of the National Park Service.

About 4,300 acres have burned since the fire, considered the worst in the park's history, got started Friday night from a camp stove accident.
