Tribute Planned For Ernie Freeman

May 07, 1986

The Young Saints Scholarship Foundation will present a tribute to the late Ernie Freeman from 4 to 6 p.m. May 18 at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College, 400 W. Washington Blvd.

Freeman, who died after a stroke in May, 1981, "arranged everyone from Bing Crosby to Bobby Darin," said event coordinator Evelyn Freeman Roberts.

The musician won Grammy awards for his arrangements of Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night"(1966) and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (1970).

The event, billed as an "Afternoon of Black American Music," will feature "spiritual, blues and jazz through gospel right down to modern-day rap and we are also going to do a medley of Freeman's hit records," Roberts said.

Tax deductible tickets are $5.
