James J. (Jimmy) Hines, 82, a professional golfer, course designer and one of the early developers of the electric golf cart, has died at Carmel Valley after a long illness.
A native of Mineola, N.Y., Hines won the Los Angeles Open in 1936 and was a member of the 1939 U.S. Ryder Cup team. He served as chairman of the PGA Tournament Committee in the 1940s.
In the 1950s and '60s, he helped design and build several golf courses, among them the Eldorado Country Club at Indian Wells, the Royal Lahaina Hotel and Golf Club at Kaanapali Beach, Hawaii, and the Del Safari Country Club at Palm Desert.
