Chancellor Robert Seinsheimer of the University of California Santa Cruz bowed to the will of the student body, declaring the banana slug the campus' official mascot.

Seinsheimer, who last week said he wasn't likely to go along with the nickname that was the overwhelming choice of students, said he made the decision reluctantly. He said the designation would stand "until such occasion as the students might wish to hold another election."

The previous nickname of UC Santa Cruz sports teams was the Sea Lions.
