Chapman College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo each won semifinal matches Tuesday and will meet at Cal State Northridge today at 1:30 p.m. for the NCAA Division II men's team tennis championship.
Led by four-time All-American Troy Turnbull, Chapman upset No. 1-seeded UC Davis, 5-4. Chapman is the defending national champion but was unseeded in the eight-team field.
Turnbull trailed in the third set of his singles match, 3-0, but won the next six games and defeated Aleco Preovolos, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Turnbull and Paul Wekesa won the deciding doubles match against Preovolos and Elliot Dun, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.
San Luis Obispo, seeded second, coasted past third-seeded Hampton Institute of Virginia, 5-1.
Chapman and San Luis Obispo split their previous two meetings this season. Both were decided by 6-3 scores.
"It's always a battle when we play them, and it's going to be the same this time," Chapman Coach Mike Edles said.
Davis and Hampton will play today at 10:30 a.m. for third place. Rollins (Fla.) will meet Stephen F. Austin (Tex.) at 8 a.m. in the consolation final.
The seventh-place match, also at 8 a.m., will be between Tennessee Martin and Valdosta (Ga.) State.
