May 18, 1986|United Press International

NEW LONDON, Conn. — An eight-hour operation to raise and move a sunken oil-filled barge to shallower water was completed Saturday on Long Island Sound, Coast Guard officials said.

The barge sank during a storm on Nov. 22, 1985. Divers will assess what repairs are needed and the barge then will be towed to shore, where its cargo of 840,000 gallons of heating oil will be pumped out, officials said.
