Daley Thompson, Britain's two-time Olympic champion, was the individual leader after the first day of a triangular meet among Great Britain, Canada and France at Arles, France.

Thompson collected 4,505 points in five events, giving the British team the lead with 16,624 points against 16,252 for the French.
