Search Abandoned for 3 in Boating Accident

May 22, 1986

The search for two men and a 5-year-old girl missing since their boat capsized in the San Pedro Channel before dawn Monday has been abandoned.

"Given the water temperature in the Catalina Channel and length of time since the accident, we must assume the missing people are dead," U.S. Coast Guard Lt. John Ochs explained Wednesday.

Desiree Rodriguez, 9, of Riverside, was rescued from the 28-foot power cruiser DC Too and the bodies of her mother, Petra Rodriguez, 29, and her aunt, Corinne Wheeler, 33, were recovered. But Coast Guard air and surface craft could not find the girl's father, Thomas Rodriguez, 30, her sister, Trisha, and uncle, Allen Wheeler.
