The fate of intercollegiate athletic programs in the L.A. Community College District will be decided tonight by the Board of Trustees in a closed session after the regularly scheduled board meeting.

The seven-member board is expected to consider a final proposal worked out between district staff and the faculty union. If approved, the agreement could go into effect Thursday.

At stake are the jobs of 13 physical education instructors designated for layoffs June 30 and as many as 41 coaching positions for the 76 athletic teams in the nine-college district.

One of the nine L.A. District schools, Pierce College in Woodland Hills, eliminated its football and basketball programs to offset the probable layoffs and to lessen the burden on its athletic budget.
