TURN-ONS AND TURN-OFFS IN CURRENT HOME ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES : Excellent Good Fair Poor : COMPACT DISCS

"Days of Future Passed." Moody Blues. Decca. (Original recording: analog. No digital remix.) You expect robust sound from this CD. After all, it's symphonic rock--the Moody Blues backed by the London Festival Orchestra. But where are the shimmering highs and resounding lows? Most of the material has a tinny sound. In 1967, when blending pop/rock and classical music was novel, this collection was innovative. The grandeur of "Knights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon"--still the Moodys' best songs--hasn't dimmed, but the rest of it now seems woefully pretentious.
