4,810 Left Homeless in Chile Floods; Girl Dies

June 18, 1986|Associated Press

SANTIAGO, Chile — Raging floodwaters from rain-swollen rivers in central Chile killed a teen-age girl, damaged 952 houses and left 4,810 people without shelter, the government said Tuesday.

The National Emergency Office said most of the damage was along the Mapocho River, which flows down from the Andes Mountains through the heart of Santiago, the capital.

A 15-year-old girl crossing a bridge over the Mapocho on Santiago's eastern edge was killed Monday when the river simply swept the bridge away, the emergency office said.
