40 Filipino Ex-GIs Get U.S. Citizenship

June 19, 1986| From United Press International

A Los Angeles federal judge awarded U.S. citizenship to 40 Filipino World War II veterans who claimed citizenship because they served in the American military during the Japanese occupation of their country, their attorney said Wednesday.

After nine days of court hearings, Chief U.S. District Judge Manuel Real gave the oath of citizenship to 18 veterans Wednesday afternoon after swearing in 22 others Tuesday, said attorney Philip Abramowitz.

"It was one of the best moments of my career," Abramowitz said. "All the veterans were crying."
