Striped Bass Peak on the Colorado River

Fishing for striped bass on the Colorado River at Bullhead City, Ariz., reached a high point for the year this week.

"Good fishermen are catching five and six stripers a day," reported Joanne Moreland of Smitty's Bait and Tackle in Bullhead City.

Successful fishermen, she said, were drifting with anchovies downstream from Davis Dam to the pipeline and Sunshine Marina areas.

WILLOW BEACH--Limits of rainbow trout reported by boat fishermen two and three miles downstream from resort, drifting with standard baits.

LAKE MEAD--Good bait fishing for small stripers at 30- to 50-foot depths, some occasional surface boils. Good largemouth bass fishing in upper basin areas off points, 15 to 30 feet, with live bait, plastics. Fair for catfish.

BULLHEAD CITY--Good striper action augmented by good rainbow trout fishing on Lake Mohave, trolling days, nights.

SALTON SEA--Good orangemouth corvina fishing. Mike Cameron, Indio, 26-4 corvina off North Shore, live bait. Best action now North Shore to Bombay Beach. Good for tilapia, croaker everywhere. Sargo slow.

LAKE CACHUMA--Good trout fishing in Cachuma Bay, dam area. Trolling best bet. Other species slow.

LAKE CASITAS--Trout limits this week. Trolling best bet, six to seven colors, near dam, in Coyote Arm, Big Island. Drifting with nightcrawlers productive at dam. Good catfish reports in Wadleigh Arm, five-foot depths with cut mackerel. Fair to good for bass at Station Canyon, casting from boats.

PYRAMID LAKE--Xang Moo Xiang, Santa Barbara, striper limit weighing 22-12. Good striper results all week. Anchovies best bet. Good for catfish.

LAKE PIRU--Good trout fishing, trolling six to eight colors near dam, in center of lake. Lures best, but still-fishing with cheese at dam productive, too. Catfish improved at north end, Santa Felicia Cove, with cut mackerel, nightcrawlers. Fair for bass in coves with nightcrawlers, plastics.

CASTAIC LAKE--Larry Tukuhara, Woodland Hills, 8-12 largemouth bass with plastic worm. Good overall bass fishing. Some limits this week. Trout slow.

LAKE ISABELLA--Good for bass, crappie, catfish, trout. Some silver salmon showing up this week in South Fork, 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. Bass good in North, South forks, off points and in brushy areas. Early mornings, late evenings best.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Otay: Best area producer of big largemouth bass, but still rated fair for quantity. Channel catfish to 19-2 this week. Miramar: Good trout fishing around buoy line, using nightcrawlers. Big red-ear sunfish in rear of coves. El Capitan: Some big blue catfish this week, to 18-12. Slow, overall. Sutherland: Good channel catfish action. Bass slow. Hodges: Fair for bass overall, skilled fishermen getting some limits. Fair to slow for channel catfish.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish best bet, plentiful limits. Good for crappie. Trout slow.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Good trout fishing for trollers and still-fishermen. Rock Wall, Zebra Room best still-fishing spots. Shore fishing good at dam, Shelter Cove. Standard baits best for still-fishermen. Good catfish results at Eagle, Juniper points, Stanfield Cutoff.

VAIL LAKE--Good for bass, catfish. Crappie slow. Robert Lyons, Los Angeles, 10 catfish weighing 92-8, largest 10 pounds. Dennis Stevenson, San Diego, 8-2, 8-13 bass the same day with plastic worm.

LAKE HENSHAW--Good results for bass, catfish. Limits of bass this week, to 10 pounds. Plastic worms best.

BISHOP AREA--Good trolling at Lake Sabrina. Jim Alser, Aspendell, 7-0 brown. Roy Allen, 4-6 brown shore fishing with nightcrawlers. Shore fishing fair to good with bait, lures. Area streams, including Lower Owens River, running high, roily. Good fly-and-bubble results Intake II and North Lake. Pleasant Valley Reservoir: Water clearing, but fishing only fair. Back country report: Many lakes still completely or mostly frozen over.

CONVICT LAKE--Fair to slow. Inlet best bet. Good results at two back country lakes, Genevieve, Mildred.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--June: Good trolling action on one color. Still-fishing best bet between June, Big Rock Resort marinas, in weedy areas. Gull and Silver: trolling good for fishermen using three to four colors. Rush Creek: Albert Casas, Pico Rivera, 5-6 rainbow with red eggs.

BRIDGEPORT AREA--Slow fly fishing on East Walker River--high, roily water. Spin fishermen having better results. Art Drummond, Salinas, seven-pound brown at Big Hole one day, two of five each the next. Good action on Bridgeport Reservoir, all techniques working well. Upper, Lower Twin Lakes good from shores only, with garlic marshmallows. Robinson Creek improved, but no limits yet. Small lures best. Fly-and-bubble rigs best at Virginia Lakes for small rainbows.
