People with medical problems and parents of newborn, newly adopted or sick children would be entitled to extended unpaid leaves from their jobs under a bill approved by the House Education and Labor Committee. The measure would permit 18 weeks of parental leave within a 24-month period to any full-time or permanent part-time employee who had worked at least three months at a business employing 15 or more people. Medical leave would be granted for a maximum of 26 weeks in a 12-month period.
