Chamber Suggests Panel on Homeless

July 06, 1986

The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce has called for the formation of a panel of chamber members, city, state, and federal officials and social-service providers to deal with the city's homeless.

In a newly issued position paper, the chamber said Santa Monica should cooperate with the city of Los Angeles to offer services to the homeless.

In addition to seeking suggestions for possible legislation, the paper suggested a fair-share policy to force communities that provide little funding for the homeless to establish programs as a condition of receiving federal and state aid.

It also called for "park rangers" to patrol the parks and discourage vagrancy.
