The State

July 07, 1986

Three family members were killed, and a fourth was listed in critical condition, when violent waves swept them out to sea at San Jose State Beach near Carmel. A witness told Monterey County sheriff's investigators that the mother had been posing for a photograph when she was hit by a wave and swept away. The father, son and 11-year-old daughter ran to her rescue, only to be dragged in themselves. Names of the victims, who were vacationing in the United States from Pakistan, were being withheld until relatives could be notified. The beach has claimed other victims in similar incidents, and signs along the beach warn visitors, "Surf subject to unexpected life-threatening waves and currents."
