Ohio Legion Plans Vote on Kent Memorial

July 12, 1986|United Press International

CLEVELAND — A committee of the Ohio American Legion on Friday recommended that the group oppose construction of a memorial for Kent State students killed and injured by state National Guardsmen during a 1970 anti-war demonstration.

The structure of 13 marble disks set in granite squares is intended to symbolize the four students slain and nine wounded when Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire during the demonstration.

"The construction of this memorial would be an insult to the patriotic veterans who served their country honorably and well," the proposed resolution said.

Legion members will vote on the measure today during their state convention in Cleveland.
