Dodgers Could Use Some of Their Ex-Players

July 12, 1986

It is ironic that ex-Dodgers Sid Fernandez, Charlie Hough and Rick Rhoden are presently the aces of the Met, Ranger and Pirate pitching staffs while Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Ron Cey, R.J. Reynolds, Jeffrey Leonard, Sid Bream, Lee Lacy, Dusty Baker, Max Venable, Jerry Royster, Candy Maldonado, etc., are making noteworthy contributions to their current teams. However, in all fairness to Dodger management, they seemed expendable at the time of departure based on the quality of their play or free agency complications.

A further embarrassment would be for Steve Howe to now join a rival team and eventually turn out to be the great reliever he showed promise of being. But that's the way it can go, even with the most respected franchise in sports history.
