Gannett Co. reported an 8% gain in net earnings for the second quarter of 1986. John J. Curley, president and chief executive, said gains in the quarter reflect the diversity of Gannett operations and their resilience in a lackluster economic environment. "The newspaper division benefited from continuing strength in classified advertising and progress at USA Today. Broadcast results reflected robust local television sales," Curley said.
