Brother Records Beating to Get Help

TOLEDO, Ohio — A 12-year-old boy who wanted someone to stop his foster mother from beating his brother made a tape of the 6-year-old's screams and gave it to a neighbor, a prosecutor says.

The 20-minute tape recorded the screams of a child being paddled and of a woman yelling, said Lucas County Assistant Prosecutor James Yavorcik. The tape was made during beatings that allegedly occurred July 1-3.

"This kid really showed a great deal of concern," Yavorcik said last week. "Hearing his voice--he has a narrative at the end of the tape--really brings tears to your eyes."

Deborah Deck, 34, of Toledo was charged with two counts of felonious assault and one of child endangerment. Her husband, Ronald Deck, 33, was indicted on a single charge of child endangerment.

Deborah Deck was being held in the Lucas County Jail on $50,000 bond and her husband was jailed on $35,000 bond.
