King Hussein in Baghdad for Talks on Iraq-Syria Ties

July 20, 1986|From Reuters

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Jordan's King Hussein arrived in Baghdad on Saturday for talks with President Saddam Hussein that diplomats expected to include ways to achieve a reconciliation between Iraq and Syria.

King Hussein said recently that he will continue mediation efforts despite an earlier failure to bring about a meeting between the foreign ministers of Iraq and Syria.

The two countries, ruled by rival wings of the Baath Socialist Party, are longtime political and ideological foes, with Damascus supporting Iran in its lengthy war with Iraq.

Jordan is a strong backer of Iraq in the war but has recently improved its relations with Syria.
