The Region : Weapons, 400 Marijuana Plants Seized

July 21, 1986

Federal agents seized a cache of automatic weapons and more than 400 marijuana plants, but arrested only one man in a raid on a camp hidden in a deep ravine of the San Gabriel Mountains between Lytle Creek and Cucamonga Canyon. Six agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were flown by helicopter into the back country and hiked for two hours with San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies to the camp, where they found a number of small marijuana patches with plants ranging from two to 11 feet tall. Mark L. Stephens, 32, was arrested after he allegedly tried to draw a firearm and take cover, authorities said. The raiding party was armed with a federal warrant issued by the U.S. attorney's office accusing Stephens of possessing fully automatic, unregistered firearms and cultivating marijuana.
