A 2-year-old girl drowned in a backyard pool Monday, the third child to drown in a local pool in the last week, authorities said.

Amber Shelby, of the 8400 block of Innsdale Lane in San Diego, had been playing with other children, and about 2 p.m. adults noticed she was missing. After a brief search, she was found in the pool.

Firefighters' efforts to revive the girl were futile, and she was pronounced dead later Monday at Paradise Valley Hospital.

On Sunday, Vanessa Cox, 1, of the 6000 block of Wunderlin Avenue in Encanto, died at Children's Hospital. She was found Wednesday floating face down in a small children's pool in her parents' yard after her mother left her and two sisters alone in the pool for a moment.

Three-year-old Eduardo King of Chula Vista drowned Saturday afternoon in a partially filled pool at an apartment complex on Flower Street in Chula Vista.
