July 24, 1986|Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS — U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar successfully underwent a quadruple coronary bypass operation today at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center, his spokesman announced.

"The doctors are very happy with the way the operation went, and they said the prognosis was excellent," Francois Giuliani told reporters. He said the 66-year-old secretary-general will spend 10 to 14 days at the hospital. Afterward, Giuliani said, "the secretary-general should lead a completely normal life."
