The World : U.S. Vetoes Plan on Contras

August 01, 1986

The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for it to comply with a World Court order to stop aiding Nicaraguan rebels. The vote was 11 to 1 for the resolution with Thailand, Britain and France abstaining, but the negative vote of the United States killed the measure. The World Court ruled June 27 in a case brought by Nicaragua that U.S. support for the contras was illegal and the United States should pay reparations. The court is the judicial arm of the United Nations, but it has no power to enforce its decisions.
