Norwalk : Policy for a Smoggy Day

August 07, 1986

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District approved a policy Monday to strengthen its procedure in alerting schoolchildren to smog episodes.

If a smog alert has been predicted for the day, a yellow flag will be raised--visible to residents as well as school employees and students--and physical education classes and other strenuous activities will be scheduled before noon.

A red flag will be raised if there is a first-stage smog alert, and strenuous activities will be cancelled, said Howard Rainey, administrator of business services.

Rainey said the district previously had a similar procedure in place, but this is the first time a policy has actually been adopted.
