Bomb Scare Delays Shultz Flight Home

August 08, 1986|United Press International

BOGOTA, Colombia — A bomb scare Thursday night delayed a flight home from Colombia for Secretary of State George P. Shultz, but no explosive was found, civil aeronautics officials said.

As Shultz sat in his car waiting for the all-clear sign, bomb-sniffing German shepherd dogs checking Catam military airport began growling and barking at a suspicious cardboard box.

Secret Service agents in protective gear, trusting the instincts of the dogs, which are trained to smell explosives, cautiously approached the box and opened it slowly. It was a box of flares.
