Lightweight Champion Defends Title Friday

DETROIT — International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Jimmy Paul of Detroit will defend his title against Darryll Tyson in a 15-round match Friday, promoters announced.

Paul enters the match with a 25-1 record and 19 knockouts. His only defeat was to Tyson, who is 23-1 with 12 knockouts, Ken Droz of Ringside Productions said.

Paul, 26, will be making his third title defense in the bout against Tyson, 25, of Washington, D.C., in Cobo Arena.

The fight will be the first world championship bout in Detroit since April 15, 1984, when then-World Boxing Council welterweight champion Milton McCory defended his title against Frances Gilles Elbilia, Droz said.
