Former University of Houston football player Lonell Phea said he handed a credit card, which he obtained by using Coach Bill Yeoman as a reference, over to a law firm that investigated the school's athletic program.

Phea, a wide receiver for the Cougars from 1979-81, told KRIV-TV in Houston, he obtained a jewelry store credit card in 1979 by using Yeoman, the school's head football coach, as a reference.

"We applied for a credit card and the guy asked who we were using for reference," Phea said. "We said 'Bill Yeoman.' I went to the mail four days later and it (credit card) was there. I was stunned."

Phea said he used the card only once to purchase a pair of earrings for about $180. Phea said he never received a bill for the purchase.
