Hermosa Beach : Ban on Smoking Endorsed

August 21, 1986

The City Council is expected to approve an ordinance Tuesday that will make it illegal to smoke in public portions of city buildings and impose a fine of up to $500.

The ordinance prohibits smoking in council chambers; the Civic Theatre; public elevators; public bathrooms in city parks, City Hall and the Community Center; the Community Center gym and public counters and reception areas in City Hall and the police and fire stations. Smoking also will be prohibited in rental rooms at community centers when they are used for public purposes.

A first violation of the ordinance, which would be enforced by the Public Safety Department, would be punishable by a fine of up to $100. The second violation within the same year would be subject to a fine of up to $200 and the third within the same year by a fine of up to $500.

The council approved the ordinance on the first reading. If approved on final reading Tuesday, it would take effect Sept. 25.
