August 22, 1986

Scott Fortune of Laguna Beach has been named to the U.S. men's national volleyball team for USA Cup competition and a tour of matches against the national team of the Soviet Union. Fortune, a junior at Stanford University, was named to the 12-member team after middle blocker Steve Salmons was injured.

The U.S. team will compete Aug. 27 against the Soviet Union at the Forum.

Angel first baseman Wally Joyner will be named an honorary Big Brother at Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Orange County Night at Anaheim Stadium Aug. 28. The 24-year-old rookie is the official spokesperson of the local organization, which matches adult volunteers with children from single-parent homes for outings and activities.

"We are very fortunate to have Joyner as our spokesperson," said Jo Alexander, executive director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Orange County. "He is an excellent role model for children everywhere."

Fullerton College pitcher Rob DeYoung has signed a contract with the Montreal Expo organization. DeYoung, a right-hander, had a 5-4 record and a 3.39 earned-run average for the Hornets last year. A graduate of Savanna High School in Anaheim, DeYoung played this summer for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, who won the National Baseball Congress Tournament.
