'Sharing the Blame'

August 24, 1986

One hundred million dollars at last! Democracy works only in painful, turbid ways to defend itself against the anti-democrats. This century has seen the brutal overthrow of innocent democracies in East Europe, and the rude shouldering aside of struggling democrats in the Russian, Cuban and Nicaraguan revolutions.

We want only to restore this revolution to the democrats who joined trustingly and hopefully in the victory over the late dictator, Anastasio Somoza. Only a democracy will remain accountable , and subject to peaceful changing of the guard in elections. Only a democracy will refrain from pressing the feared "Revolution Without Borders" against the neighboring, democratic states. Only a democracy can be relatively free and open to peaceful change. That is why we so desperately need this one small turning point in the long struggle against the anti-democrats.
