Bomb Threat Delays L.A. Flight

August 26, 1986

A bogus bomb threat delayed a People Express flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Newark, N.J., early today and caused the evacuation of its crew and 490 passengers, according to an airport spokesman.

An anonymous caller phoned in the threat shortly before midnight Monday, delaying Flight 18 for more than six hours while the empty Boeing 747 was towed to a remote area of the airport and searched by bomb squad officers and explosives-sniffing dogs. No bomb was found. People Express Inc. is the parent company of Frontier Airlines, which suspended its flights Sunday because of financial problems.
