The mayor of Kenner, La., filed suit against the owner of a Mississippi River barge where toxic gas was ignited by a bolt of lightning, sending 36 residents to the hospital. Aaron Broussard filed a class-action suit against American Cyanamid Co. on his behalf and on behalf of those injured. The City Council was expected to file a separate damage suit on behalf of the city, a suburb of New Orleans. Authorities said lightning ignited acrylonitrile, a suspected carcinogen, in the barge that was being unloaded Tuesday.
