Soviet scientists said they hope to install equipment in the United States for monitoring nuclear weapons explosions at the Nevada desert test site by January or February. The move would reciprocate for the recent installation of U.S. equipment near the Soviet test site in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan by a team of private American scientists. Igor Nersesov, supervisor of the Kazakhstan experiment, said at a Moscow news conference that a Soviet delegation will travel to the United States to discuss the Nevada test project. There was no immediate comment from U.S. officials.
